GAME VIEWING, BIRDING At present the West Coast National Park covers an area of more than 20 000 ha and includes Postberg Nature Reserve. The lagoon and the coastal zone, together with the island Malgas, Jetten, Marcus and Schaapen, were proclaimed in 1985 and several areas have been added since the date. It is also planned to include privately owned land o a contractual basis. The national park's vegetation is predominantly West Coast Sandveld (comprising low bushes, sedges and succulents, with many flowering annuals in spring), but there are also elements of coastal fynbos (heath), particularly in the east. The salt marshes and mud flats that cover extensive areas of the lagoon at low tide attract huge flocks of migrant waders I summer. Large numbers of gannets, Cape cormorants, and jackass penguins inhabit the islands, with the largest known colony of southern black-backed gulls occurring on Schaapen Island. Several game species roam freely through the Postberg Nature Reserve, including black wildebeest, bontebok and eland. Location: West Coast; Langebaan Lagoon. Access: From Cap Town take the R27 northwards for about 110 km, turn left and drive another 10 km to Langebaan. The reserve incorporates the lagoon and both shores. Accommodation: Geelbek Environmental Centre, Tel: (02287) 22798, has limited accommodation available under certain circumstances. Beach bungalows and a camping and caravan site are provided by the Municipality of Langebaan, P.O. Box 11, Langebaan 7357. Tel (02287) 2115. Other facilities: A 25-km network of game- and flower-viewing roads at Postberg Nature Reserve; watersports permitted; information centre; picnic sites at Postberg; tours to bird islands. Open: Year-round; Postberg is only open from August to October (flower season). Opening time: Within the park 'proper' from 09h00 to 18h00.
